    RESEARCH INTEREST
Elisabet M. Nilsson is a computer game researcher, and holds a Ph.D. in Educational Sciences from the Faculty of Education and Society, Malmö University in Sweden. Her research interest concerns the relationships between social change and technological development, and how the introduction of new technologies and mediating tools evoke new patterns of behaviour and thinking. Two tendencies are important as a background to the work presented in her doctoral dissertation “Simulated ‘real’ worlds: Actions mediated through computer game play in science education” (Nilsson, 2010). Firstly, the rapidly increased use of digital media among young people. Secondly, the challenge digital media pose for education.

In 2010 Nilsson started to work as a researcher at MEDEA Collaborative Media Initiative, Malmö University. MEDEA is a design led research centre with a long history of exploring platforms for participatory design practices, engaging the users in the innovation process to attain sustainable solutions. At MEDEA Nilsson has primarily been engaged in research projects exploring co-design oriented activities, user-driven innovation, and tools and methods to support collaborative learning. The majority of her projects have been conducted in real-world contexts applying, participatory design, and living labs methodologies.

The basic idea behind this living lab methodology is to set up labs where people from companies, organizations, public institutions and universities team up with citizens in order to experiment and create new products, services and new knowledge. Nilsson’s research activities are based on this methodological approach combined with approaches from her own field of expertise: educational sciences.

Field of specialization: educational sciences, educational technologies, participatory design practices, living lab methodologies, games and learning research, research process management, research methodologies.
